June to October is the most reliable window: dry, warm days around 28C, calm sea and low humidity. December to February is hotter and just as dry but costs the most. April and May bring the long rains and the lowest rates of the year.
Zanzibar sits six degrees south of the equator, so the island never really gets cold. What changes through the year is rain, humidity, wind and price. Pick the season that matches what you actually want to do, then let us hold the room before the rate moves.
The two dry seasons
The long dry season runs from June to October. Days sit around 27 to 29C, the humidity drops, the sea is flat on the north coast and the sunsets are clean. This is the season most first time visitors should book, and it overlaps with the mainland safari peak, so a Serengeti plus Zanzibar trip works well here.
The short dry season runs from late December to February. It is hotter, often 31 to 33C, with warm sea and long lazy days. Christmas and New Year is the single most expensive week on the island and the good beach resorts sell out months ahead.

The rains, and why they are not a deal breaker
The long rains fall in April and May. Expect heavy afternoon downpours rather than all day grey, and expect some smaller beach hotels to close for maintenance. Rates drop by a third or more, so if you are flexible and mostly want a quiet beach and a good room, it is the cheapest good trip you will get.
The short rains arrive in November. They are lighter and patchy, and most days still give you five or six hours of sun. November is our favourite value month for couples who do not need a guarantee of perfect weather.
Wind, tide and what it means for your beach
The kite season runs on the kaskazi wind from December to March and the kusi wind from June to September, both landing on the south east coast at Paje, Jambiani and Bwejuu. If you are not a kiter, those same months put more wind and seaweed on that coast.
The east coast has a big tidal range, so the sea walks out several hundred metres twice a day. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north swim at any tide, which is why families and honeymooners usually end up there.
Wildlife months worth planning around
Whale sharks pass Mafia Island from October to February. Humpback whales are seen off Zanzibar between July and September. Dolphins at Kizimkazi run all year, best in the calm early morning of the dry seasons.

What is the cheapest month to visit Zanzibar?
May is the cheapest, followed by April and early June. Beach resort rates can fall 30 to 50 percent against the December peak, and transfers and tours run at the same price all year, so the saving is real.
Does it rain all day in Zanzibar during the rainy season?
Rarely. Even in April, rain usually arrives as a heavy burst in the afternoon or overnight. The bigger practical issue is that a few small properties close for the season.
When is the sea warmest in Zanzibar?
The Indian Ocean here sits between 25 and 29C all year. It is warmest from January to March and coolest, only slightly, in July and August.
How far ahead should I book a Zanzibar hotel?
For July, August and the Christmas and New Year period, book three to six months ahead. For April, May and November you can usually book a few weeks out and still choose freely.
